Dubai Reintroduces 4-Day Work Week for Government Employees This Summer

The Government of Dubai has officially brought back its popular “Our Flexible Summer” initiative, giving many government employees the opportunity to enjoy a four-day work week during the summer months.

The programme began on 29 June 2026 and is being implemented for the third consecutive year. Under the initiative, participating government departments can adopt one of two flexible working models, allowing many employees to have Fridays off while ensuring that essential public services continue without interruption.

The primary objective of the programme is to improve work-life balance, reduce stress during the hottest months of the year, and enhance employee well-being. Dubai officials believe that happier and healthier employees are generally more productive, more engaged, and better able to deliver high-quality public services.

The initiative has received positive feedback in previous years. Surveys conducted after earlier editions showed improvements in employee satisfaction, family time, and workplace morale. Based on these results, the government decided to continue the programme in 2026.

It is important to note that the scheme applies only to participating government entities. Private-sector companies are not required to follow the four-day schedule, although some businesses may choose to introduce flexible working arrangements voluntarily.

The move reinforces Dubai’s reputation as a city focused on innovation—not only in technology and infrastructure but also in workplace policies. By experimenting with flexible work models, the emirate aims to attract and retain skilled professionals while maintaining efficient government services.

For residents, the change may also lead to adjustments in operating hours for certain government offices, so people planning to visit these offices are encouraged to check their schedules in advance.
