UAE: How New Sharjah Diversion Helps Residents Cut Travel Time from 20 to 3 Minutes

Residents of Al Tawoon, Al Majaz, Al Khan, and Al Mamzar in Sharjah are experiencing significant relief in their daily commutes, thanks to a newly opened traffic diversion on Al Tawoon Street. The new route has eased congestion, reducing travel time by up to 25 minutes during peak hours.

Previously, the single exit from Al Ittihad Road into Al Tawoon Street caused severe bottlenecks, especially in the evenings. Traffic would often back up to Nesto Supermarket, forcing vehicles heading towards Al Khan and Al Mamzar to take a U-turn at the roundabout, worsening congestion. With the new diversion in place, residents report that reaching home now takes just three to four minutes after entering Sharjah.

Abdullah Alshami, a sales executive at Koncept Creation and a resident of Al Khan Tower, shared his experience of enduring long delays due to the limited exit options. He described how traffic on Al Tawoon Street was consistently heavy throughout the day, except late at night. His commute from Business Bay to Sharjah used to take an additional 20 minutes just to reach his home, despite its close proximity to the border. Now, with the new diversion, he arrives home in just three minutes, significantly improving his daily routine.

The reduced travel time is not only a convenience but also a cost-saving measure for many residents. Sameer Khan, a resident of Central Tower in Al Khan, noted the financial benefits of the improved traffic flow. His drive home from Dubai Investment Park previously involved 20 to 30 minutes of idling in traffic after entering Sharjah, leading to increased fuel consumption. Now, the smoother journey allows him to save on petrol, which adds up to a noticeable amount over time.

With the success of this traffic diversion, residents are hopeful that similar improvements will be introduced in other congested areas of Sharjah, further enhancing the city’s infrastructure and daily commute experience.
