Dubai News Today: UAE Announces New Summer Work Break for Outdoor Workers
The UAE has officially begun its annual Midday Work Ban, a nationwide initiative designed to protect outdoor workers from extreme summer temperatures. The regulation came into effect today and will remain in force throughout the hottest months of the year.
The rule prohibits employers from requiring employees to work outdoors under direct sunlight between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. every day. The initiative is overseen by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and has become one of the country’s most important labor protection measures.
Dubai experiences extremely high temperatures during the summer, often exceeding 45°C (113°F), with humidity making conditions even more challenging. Construction workers, road maintenance crews, landscapers, delivery personnel, and other outdoor employees are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.
Authorities have instructed employers to reorganize work schedules so that physically demanding tasks are completed during the cooler morning hours or later in the afternoon. Companies must also provide:
- Shaded rest areas
- Cold drinking water
- Electrolyte supplements where necessary
- First-aid facilities
- Adequate ventilation for workers
Inspectors across Dubai have started visiting construction sites and industrial areas to ensure companies comply with the regulations. Employers who violate the midday break face financial penalties and possible legal action.
Officials have emphasized that protecting workers’ health is not only a legal obligation but also improves productivity and reduces workplace accidents. Studies have shown that employees working in safer conditions are more efficient and suffer fewer medical emergencies.
Many construction companies in Dubai have already adjusted their schedules. Some now begin shifts before sunrise and resume work after 3:00 p.m., helping projects continue while respecting labor laws.
Healthcare professionals have welcomed the initiative, noting that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can have lasting health consequences. They encourage all residents—not just outdoor workers—to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat, and seek shade whenever possible.
The UAE introduced the midday work ban over two decades ago, and it has since become a model for other countries with similar climates. Authorities say compliance levels continue to improve each year as awareness grows among employers and workers alike.
Officials also urged members of the public to report any visible violations through official government channels so inspectors can investigate promptly.
The initiative reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to improving labor welfare while maintaining the country’s rapid pace of infrastructure development. As Dubai continues expanding its transport networks, residential communities, and commercial districts, worker safety remains a key priority for regulators and employers alike.
