Dubai’s Massive Road Upgrade Plan: How RTA Is Fighting Traffic in 2026

Why Dubai Needs These Upgrades

Areas such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Hessa Street, Dubai Harbour, Arabian Ranches, Motor City, and Studio City have seen substantial increases in daily vehicle numbers over recent years. To address these challenges, the RTA has announced seven major road projects scheduled for completion during June 2026.
The Sheikh Zayed Road Expansion
One of the most significant improvements involves Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai’s most important highway.
The RTA is adding an additional traffic lane for motorists joining Sheikh Zayed Road from Hessa Street while traveling toward Abu Dhabi. This route is used by thousands of commuters every day, particularly residents living in rapidly expanding communities such as Dubai Marina, JVC, Sports City, and surrounding districts.
The extra lane is expected to improve traffic flow significantly by reducing bottlenecks during morning and evening rush hours.
Improvements Around Airport Road
Airport Road is another critical transport corridor because it connects travelers, businesses, and logistics operations with Dubai International Airport.
The RTA is implementing traffic enhancements at the intersection of Airport Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. These improvements are intended to improve traffic movement, reduce delays, and support smoother access to airport-related areas.
For a city that depends heavily on aviation and tourism, maintaining efficient airport connectivity is extremely important.
New Roads for Growing Communities
Dubai’s suburban communities are expanding quickly, and the RTA is building new connections to support them.
A new road linking Emirates Road and Sheikh Zayed Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street is scheduled to open during June. This project will improve access to communities such as Villanova and Arabian Ranches III, making daily commuting easier for thousands of residents.
At the same time, another new road connecting Al Qudra Road and Hessa Street between Dubai Studio City and Motor City will also open. This connection aims to reduce travel times and provide alternative routes for drivers.
Dubai Harbour Bridge Project
Perhaps the most exciting infrastructure development is the Dubai Harbour Bridge Project.
The project is already more than 90% complete and will soon begin opening to traffic. The new bridge stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers and directly connects Sheikh Zayed Road with Dubai Harbour. It includes two lanes in each direction and is expected to accommodate around 6,000 vehicles per hour.
The most impressive benefit is the reduction in travel time.
Journeys that currently take around 12 minutes are expected to take only about 3 minutes once the bridge becomes fully operational. This improvement will benefit residents, tourists, and businesses throughout the surrounding areas.
Zabeel Area Traffic Changes
The RTA has also introduced traffic modifications in the Zabeel area as part of the Al Mustaqbal Street Development Project.
These changes include traffic diversions and route adjustments near the Trade Centre Roundabout. Drivers have been advised to carefully follow road signs and plan their journeys in advance while the new system is implemented.
Although temporary adjustments can sometimes cause short-term inconvenience, they are intended to improve long-term traffic flow.
