Government Brings Back the 4-Day Summer Work Week
Thousands of government employees in Dubai will soon enjoy a more flexible work schedule as the emirate officially reintroduces its popular “Our Flexible Summer” initiative. The programme begins on 29 June 2026 and is being implemented for the third consecutive year, reflecting Dubai’s continued focus on employee well-being, productivity, and work-life balance.
Under the initiative, eligible government employees will be divided into different working models. Many staff members will receive a three-day weekend, with Fridays off, effectively giving them a four-day work week during the summer months. Others will work reduced or flexible hours depending on the operational requirements of their departments.
The initiative was first introduced as a pilot programme and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both employees and government entities. Internal evaluations found improvements in employee satisfaction, morale, and overall productivity while maintaining high-quality public services. These results encouraged Dubai authorities to continue the programme each summer.
Summer temperatures in Dubai frequently exceed 45°C, making commuting and daily routines more challenging. By allowing flexible schedules, the government hopes employees can better balance family responsibilities, reduce commuting stress, and avoid travelling during the hottest parts of the day.
Officials have emphasized that government services will continue without interruption. Departments have organized rotating schedules so customer service centres and essential public services remain fully operational despite reduced working hours for some employees.
The programme is also aligned with Dubai’s broader ambition to become one of the world’s best places to live and work. In recent years, the emirate has introduced several labour and lifestyle initiatives aimed at improving quality of life, including flexible work arrangements, hybrid working options in some sectors, and expanded employee wellness programmes.
Business leaders are watching the initiative closely. While it currently applies only to government employees, some private companies have voluntarily adopted similar summer schedules after seeing improvements in staff engagement and productivity. Experts believe flexible work arrangements can reduce burnout, improve retention, and create healthier workplaces.
Human resources specialists say flexible working is no longer viewed simply as an employee benefit but as a strategic tool that helps organizations attract skilled professionals in an increasingly competitive global job market.
Residents have largely welcomed the announcement, especially families with school-age children who can spend more time together during the summer holidays. Many employees also expect reduced traffic congestion on Fridays if fewer commuters are travelling to work.
Although the initiative is seasonal, it reflects a longer-term shift in workplace culture across Dubai, where technology and flexible employment practices are increasingly shaping how organizations operate.
Government officials will continue monitoring the programme throughout the summer to assess its effectiveness and determine whether further improvements can be introduced in future years.
