Dubai Airport’s AI Smart Gates Process Over 9 Million Passengers in Just Six Months

Dubai International Airport has achieved another major milestone in its digital transformation. According to Dubai’s General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), more than 9.4 million passengers passed through immigration between January and June 2026, with over 9 million travelers using AI-powered Smart Gates.

The Smart Gates have dramatically reduced the average immigration clearance time to just 3.4 seconds per passenger. Instead of waiting in long immigration queues, eligible travelers simply walk through the automated gates, where facial recognition and biometric verification complete the process almost instantly.

Why this matters

Dubai has consistently invested in becoming one of the world’s smartest travel hubs. The new figures demonstrate that automation is now handling the vast majority of international travelers arriving and departing through Dubai International Airport.

Benefits include:

  • Faster immigration processing.
  • Reduced waiting times during peak travel seasons.
  • Less congestion inside airport terminals.
  • Improved passenger experience for tourists and business travelers.
  • Greater security through AI-powered biometric verification.

Technology behind the system

The Smart Gates rely on:

  • Facial recognition.
  • Biometric identity verification.
  • AI-powered passenger authentication.
  • Automated passport matching.
  • Real-time immigration database integration.

Because of this technology, passengers no longer need to interact with immigration officers in many cases. Once identity is verified, the gate opens automatically within seconds.

Advice for travelers

Dubai authorities recommend that eligible travelers pre-register before using the Smart Gates. Registration helps ensure the fastest possible experience and minimizes delays.

The Smart Gates are available for many UAE residents and eligible international travelers, depending on nationality and travel documentation.

A step toward Dubai’s Smart City vision

This achievement aligns with Dubai’s long-term strategy of becoming one of the world’s leading smart cities. From AI in government services to autonomous transport and digital public services, Dubai continues to invest heavily in technology that improves efficiency.

Handling more than 9 million passengers in six months through automated immigration demonstrates how large-scale AI systems can successfully operate in one of the busiest international airports in the world.

Overall, the latest figures reinforce Dubai International Airport’s reputation as one of the fastest and most technologically advanced airports globally, helping millions of travelers save time while maintaining high security standards.
